enviroTruck Program

Green Fleets BC enviroTruck Program
Green Fleets BC is working with the BC Trucking Association to help BC trucking companies save money, improve worker health and decrease smog and greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). Green Fleets BC wants to support the industry in making good choices for best results.

Paradise foods enviroTruckNewer engines, aerodynamic enhancements, anti-idling units and high-tech tires can all help improve emission reductions, and Green Fleets BC is supporting those in the industry that wish to use “enviroTrucks” featuring these technologies. Green Fleets BC offers financial incentives to fleets interested in participating in the program.

Why should I be concerned?
A recent study by the Rocky Mountain Institute Group for the Canadian Trucking Alliance identified where a litre of fuel is used in long haul operations.  Only 11% of the energy is actually used to move a tractor-trailer and its cargo from A to B.

The rest is “lost” due to the following factors:
• 56% to thermodynamic effects in the engine
• 19% to overcome aerodynamic forces
• 12% due to idling
• 11% to tire rolling resistance
• 2% to driveline and transmission drag

What is a Green Fleets BC enviroTruck?
A Class 7 or 8 cab/chassis unit that incorporates emission reduction strategies and technologies (add-on devices) leading to a target reduction of 15% or more in fuel consumption.

Green Fleets BC enviroTruck =

2007 or newer model year heavy truck engine*   + Speed limiter activated at no more than 105km/hr    +   A combination of technologies (add-on devices)

* Must meet or exceed this emission standard.

What trailers do Green Fleets BC enviroTrucks use?
A Green Fleets BC enviroTruck is expected to use an environmentally friendly trailer, specifically a 2005 or newer dry van, reefer or trailer unit that incorporates emission reduction technologies (add-on devices) leading to at least a 5% -=  reduction in fuel consumption.

What is involved?
To participate in the Green Fleets BC enviroTruck program, a fleet owner/operator will be asked to identify the fleet’s standard and potential emission reduction technologies and can select from a list of approved technologies (add-on devices) to tailor an approach that fits the fleet. Green Fleets BC will use this information to calculate a potential emission reduction and incentive amount of up to $10,000 per tractor-trailer, to a maximum of $50,000 a fleet.

Participant Experiences – Don’t just take our word for it!  Please read about these fleet experiences.

  • Glenncoe Transport Ltd (pdf) - “We had been looking to replace almost two dozen older tractors to our fleet of approximately 170 vehicles for some time, and we knew we wanted a truck that was environmentally-friendly.  The enviroTruck met our specifications perfectly” explains Glenn Coe, the company’s VP of Operations read more (pdf)
  • Paradise Island Foods Ltd (pdf) - “Working with Green Fleets BC, we are collecting the hard data to demonstrate to those company owners who are considering enviroTruck options, that making the transition isn’t just environmentally sound, it’s a good business move” said Jason Kozubal, the company’s Operations Manager read more (pdf)

Glenncoe enviroTruckIn 2008 the goal of the Green Fleets BC enviroTruck program was to expand to a minimum of a 100 units (trucks and/or trailers) on the road, and we exceeded our target. The Green Fleets BC enviroTrucks can reduce smog-producing emissions by 90% or more and GHG emissions by 15 to 20% over traditional models. The emissions reductions from each participating truck and trailer unit is equivalent to taking 10 to 15 cars off the road.

How do I apply?

1. Complete the application form* (pdf)
2. Fax it to Green Fleets BC @ 604-488-5351
3. Green Fleets BC will calculate your potential incentive amount
