One of the world’s largest applications of computers is to manage and record the operational performance of gasoline and diesel engines.  The need by manufacturers to optimize MPG performance and meet regulatory requirements to achieve dramatic reductions in emissions has been a major force in introducing electronic controls to engines. Engine Control Modules (ECM’s) have been installed by many diesel engine manufacturers since the early 1990’s.

ECM’s have a feature that can be invaluable to a fleet manager – the device can be accessed and key parameters can be set to reduce fuel use and emissions.

A fleet manager can use a computer program to access the ECM and pull reports from engines via an engine scanner. At the same time key parameters can be set that will have the effect of reducing fuel consumption. Example parameters include:

• Setting engine idle times
• Setting maximum engine RPM
• Setting maximum road speeds
