Speeds in excess of 100 km per hour dramatically decrease a vehicle's fuel economy. A four to five km per hour speed decrease results in a four per cent to five per cent savings in fuel costs. The BC Trucking Association, as part of a national trucking 14 point clean air plan, has taken the position that speed limiters should be installed on all trucks and set at no more than 105 km/hr.  Pilot tests have shown fuel savings of as much as 10,500 litres of diesel fuel per year by a typical tractor-trailer unit when using a speed limiter.

The Engine Control Module (ECM) in most current vehicles can be used to limit road speed, idling times and maximum RPM.
